So What is Veeam?

customers can perform both local and cloud backups and replication for virtual machines running on the VMware and Hyper-V platforms. In addition, agent based backup for physical servers running Windows or Linux can be utilized to provide a complete solution for data protection in a business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) plan.

A Real World Example
Let’s look at a practical application of using CyberOne Data and Veeam to build out data backup and replication as part of a business continuity and disaster recovery plan for a small business.
For this example, we’ll use a small manufacturing firm. With the prevalence of virtualization today, we’ll assume all three servers at the manufacturing firm that are detailed below are virtualized using VMware’s vSphere.
A typical manufacturing firm likely runs Microsoft Office and stores those files on a file server (server #1). Let’s assume they use the popular Outlook desktop client along with Microsoft Exchange for in-house email (server #2) and QuickBooks (server #3) for their accounting. They also use Customer Relationship Management and Shipping software but decided not long ago to invest in a SaaS solution for those particular needs and feels confident with the service level agreements those providers have offered, no additional protection is needed.
To build a reliable business continuity and disaster plan (full disclosure: this only addresses components of a BCDR plan – this is not an entire plan), let’s look at implementing a simple solution using CyberOne Data and Veeam.
First and foremost, the owner of the manufacturing firm decides he wants to minimize his risk of downtime because his customers expect him to be available at all hours of the day and on weekends. He wants “high availability” for his network environment.
To provide quick and simple high availability for the aforementioned three servers, we begin by installing Veeam Availability Suite on a Windows server at the manufacturing firm’s location. Next, we identify the virtual machines to be backed up and replicated and pick a local storage location to use. A backup schedule is devised to capture both full backups and incremental changes. To then configure offsite backups and replication (part of the 3-2-1 rule), we’ll use the integrated Cloud Connect feature of the Veeam Availability Suite to identify an offsite repository (CyberOne Data) for the backups and replications. We set the jobs in motion and voila! It’s really that easy.
